WORKSHOPS, Sunday, August 29, 2010

Workshop Venue

Pre-Conference Workshops will be held at:

University of Economics and Law
Faculté de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion
13 allée François Mitterrand - ANGERS (49), France

There will be four pre-conference workshops offered on Sunday, August 29, 2010:

The workshops will last 1/2 day. Costs are as follows:

  • 80 € for a single workshop only (65 € for ICOH members, 50 € for students and persons from developing countries)
  • 120 € for two workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon (100 € for ICOH members, 80 € for students and persons from developing countries)

Workshop Program

Morning (9:00 am - 12:00 pm):

  • Associating biomechanics and verbalisation methods

    Speakers and discussion leaders:

    - Agnès Aublet-Cuvelier (INRS / France)

    - Yves Clot (CNAM / France)

    - Gabriel Fernandez (CNAM / France)

    - Clarisse Gaudez (INRS / France)

    - Martine Gilles (INRS / France)

    - Adriana Savescu (INRS / France)

    - Pascal Simonnet (CNAM / France)

    - Lien Wioland (INRS / France)

   Language: English

   Keywords:

   - Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD)

   - Exposure assessment

   - Biomechanics

   - Self-confrontation

   Teaching aims:

The purpose of this workshop is to provide an outline of various methods association used
when performing operations in a work environment and to introduce innovative approaches in
   relation to MSD prevention research.
Its teaching aims are to assist in understanding:

       1.    Different conditions of usage for surface electromyography and the movement
analysis system with a view to workstation activity analysis,
       2.    The role of self-confrontation in preventing MSD, from assessing exposure to
              transforming work situations,

       3.    The advantages and limits of associating biomechanics and verbalisation methods in
              different usage contexts.

   Content:

Examples of operations in a work environment will be presented during this workshop. These
illustrate various methodological and analytical options determined by the research aims.
These presentations will be followed by a discussion with participants. The workshop is
specifically intended for ergonomists within a research and/or operational perspective.

The prevalence of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is still underestimated.
In our experience, TOS is the most frequent nerve entrapment syndrome after carpal tunnel
    syndrome.

A primary TOS may be responsible for diffuse symptoms as well as distal paresthesia or
pain; intrinsic muscles atrophy is exceptional. Furthermore, it usually favours and enhances
the manifestations of a distal entrapment syndrome (double crush).

Conversely, every painful disorder in the upper arm can lead to a scapulobrachial dysfunction
    and a secondary TOS.

In the absence of a clear-cut aetiology the diagnosis of TOS is usually considered.
But when a distal pathology is present the associated TOS is usually overlooked and can
be responsible for a (relative) therapeutic failure.

Thus it is of great importance to evocate and to search an associated TOS in the presence
of every painful disorder in the upper limb (carpal tunnel syndrome, lateral elbow pain,
    chronic pain…)

The diagnosis of TOS is based on clinical data: history, symptoms characteristics
(type, topography, exacerbating postures), and physical examination with provocative tests.

The aims of this workshop are to familiarize with the situations in which a TOS must be
suspected, to study the strategy to assess the patient symptoms and to evaluate the
criteria which permit to establish the diagnosis and to propose adapted treatments.

    Contenu :
